Rugby union is deep in the Scottish Borders’ DNA, and is the main sport played in the region – a history which has given rise to many international players and a major part in the national game.

It’s thought the Borders’ affinity for rugby might derive from the local tradition of hand ba’ – a street game similar to rugby, which is still played in Jedburgh today.

Seven-a-side rugby was invented in Melrose in 1883. The Border town Rugby Sevens are an important fixture on the sporting calendar, with Melrose Sevens as a major highlight that attracts fans and visitors from all over the world.
